Blackmagic Announces the 2.5K Cinema Camera

Blackmagic just announced the Cinema Camera, a ‘2.5K’ video camera for $2995. What is 2.5K exactly? Well, it’s another marketing term that I was assuming would be 2.5 times the resolution of 1920 x 1080, but unless they’re referring to the sensor resolution, the camera is really only capable of recording ‘1.6K’. That’s not to say I’m not impressed with the camera – actually quite the opposite. The Cinema Camera features several methods of recording video, including the capability of recording uncompressed RAW video via a 2.5″ removable SATA SSD & an Apple Thunderbolt port. There camera is also capable of storing compressed video at 1080P and outputting video via an SDI cable. It uses the Canon EF & Carl Zeis lens mount, so there are plenty to chose from.
